    Notes
    • Hugh, or Mac as he was known as in the Wairarapa, had his schooling at Cambridge until his father Felix died. Mac was 15 years old. He was sent south to his Mother Freda's brother, Raymond's dairy farm at Tawaha near Martinborough where he learned dairy farming. About 1933 Mac moved off the Tawaha farm to Masterton, share milking on L T Daniels farm and where he met Joyce Jury who was working in the Daniel home.
Joyce prepped for her wedding at Bob (Guy Robert) Jury's farm at Papawai Greytown. Mac was share milking at L T Danniels farm at Masterton at this time. In 1938 they moved back to Tawaha to Raymond Parsons's farm as a sharemilker on a 25% share basis and the promise that he would be able to purchase the farm in due course. After some 13 years Mac was unable to sort out the purchase of the farm. He resolved that he would not be able to achieve his ambitions so moved his family to Martinborough in 1952, purchasing a home at Venice St. Raymond Parsons sold the farm a year or two later much to Mac's annoyance.
Mac, obtained work with Loan & Merchantile, Martinborough Branch for 6 weeks as they were about to close the branch. The activity at the branch picked up to such an extent in those 6 weeks that the branch was kept open and finally ran all other competitors out of town. The firm later became Dalgetys and later again Wright Stevensons Ltd and later still Wrightsons. In about 1964 Mac and Browne moved from Martinbouough to Carterton to manage the Dalgety branch there. They lived in a new home built at 24 Armstrong Ave, Carterton. It is said that he was cautioned by the Masterton head office for the Wairarapa to tone down his activities at Carterton as he was running close to the same turnover as the Masterton Branch head office. The Martinborough branch of Dalgetys closed within 2 years of his move to Carterton. Mac's wife, Browne, Died whilst they were living at Carterton on 13th April 1971. She is interred at Greytown Cemetery. Mac later married Monica Jones who he met at Christchurch while attended his mother, Freda's, funeral a few years later. They lived at Carterton and after Mac's retirement moved to Christchurch living at 42 Baynes st Burwood, Christchurch. Mac died after problems with surgery at Christchurch Public Hospital on 17-5-1989. Monica died in 2001 at Christchurch. Both ashes are interred at the Linwood Crematorium gardens at 455 Linwood Road Christchurch.

(NOTE Dad, Huia Darby McGarry mentioned visiting Auckland by train to visit Grandmother ??????)

The TAWAHA Area is located about 3 miles from Martinborough at the foot of the Bidwells cutting, the top of which is the joining of the Featherston & Greytown roads to Martinborough. The location of Raymond Parsons's farm is on the first road 'Georges Road' to the right at the foot of Bidwells cutting, and is the first home on the right hand side of that road. The homestead and farm buildings were still in existance (2009). The farm was of some 150 acres divided into two areas. The first of about 75 acres was at the homestead and the other part is one mile away at the end of Georges Road and runs down to the Ruamahunga River. Murry Parsons and I flew over the Tawaha area when I flew up to Auntie Bet's funeral at Masterton in 2008. Murray pointed out "Jury's Island" on the Ruamahunga river, a couple of miles down river from the lower farm area. I remember asking my mother, Brownie, where was Jury's Island. She told me it was a "lost Island." It is in fact a lost Island these days being landlocked due to changes in the river's course over the intervening 175 years. The site is plain to see with the land profiles showing up the island perimeters and the Pa area, in fact there survives a couple of trees on the old Pa site (2008).
