Pauatahanui Burial Ground, Pauatahanui, Porirua, Wellington, New Zealand

Notes: The Pauatahanui Public Burial Ground lies between the Paekakariki Hill Road and St Alban’s Anglican Church, on the southern edge of Pauatahanui Village in Porirua City (near Wellington). The land was given by the Stace family in the 1850s, and was owned and administered by a Trust. The first interment in this historic site took place in 1860, and many members of pioneer families of the district are buried there. All the Trustees named on the Certificate of Title have died and the Trust deed does not contain the power to dispose of the land. The Title for the parcel of land contains a caveat in the interests of the Stace Family.
The Pauatahanui Burial Ground is also well known for its collection of heritage roses, which are lovingly tended by a group of local women. For more information and to view an online photo gallery, or download a booklet, go to the Heritage Roses page (click here.)
A list of the headstones and plaques transcripted by members of the Porirua Branch of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists, December 2003, and updated in March 2004 is avaliable here.

The cemetery records have now been incorporated into Porirua City Council's cemetery database, along with headstone photographs taken in November 2006. To search Pauatahanui Burial Records click here.
